Why naming a discipline after an architecture ages badly
The most predictable failure in technical vocabulary, and it is happening again in front of us.
The pattern
A discipline names itself after the dominant technology of its moment. The technology is replaced. The name now describes a mechanism nobody uses, and everyone has to choose between a term that is wrong and a migration nobody wants to do.
It is one of the most reliably repeated mistakes in technical naming, and it is being made again now.
Why it happens
At the moment of naming, the architecture feels like the essential thing rather than an implementation detail. It is the newest part, the hardest to understand, and the thing everyone is talking about. Naming after it feels precise, and precision is a virtue.
The error is not imprecision. It is choosing the layer that changes fastest as the thing to name.
The test at coining time: if the underlying technology were replaced tomorrow, would the term still describe the work? If not, the name has an expiry date, and it is usually shorter than anyone expects.
Applied to the current terms
A term naming large language models specifically inherits the lifespan of that architecture. If the dominant systems become something else, the term describes a subset of the work and reads as dated in the way that naming a discipline after a particular database would.
Terms naming a generative engine are one layer safer, since they name a behaviour rather than an implementation, and still narrower than a term naming the relationship.
None of this makes the narrower terms wrong. They are more precise about today and less durable, and that is a real trade rather than an error.
The opposite failure
Naming so broadly that the term describes nothing. A name covering all interaction with all systems is future-proof and useless, because it draws no boundary and therefore settles no argument.
The workable position is to name the relationship and the outcome while staying silent on the mechanism, which is why AIO is preferred here and why that preference is a judgement rather than a fact.
What to do with a term that has aged
Keep it, scope it, and date it. A term that once described the whole field and now describes part of it is still useful for that part, and a reference should say when the narrowing happened rather than quietly retiring the word.
