AIO and SEO

SEO optimized for ranked links in the search era. AIO is the term AIOFacts uses for work aimed at recommendation in the AI era. Much of the craft carries over, and the goal moves from ranking to being recommended. The two overlap substantially, and AIOFacts does not present AIO as a settled successor to SEO.

SEO  /  Search Engine Optimization  /  noun

The practice of structuring a website and its signals so that search engines rank it among the results a person can click.

SEO as its own practitioners describe it. AIOFacts does not speak for them, and this page does not treat their term as a strawman.

This table records usage. It does not rank the terms, and the last row is labelled as an AIOFacts position rather than as a fact about the field.

Documented usage

Supported

What follows describes how the term is used by its own practitioners, which is observable in their published work.

Search engine optimization has decades of literature, published platform documentation, established tooling, and a large professional community. Many practitioners consider work on AI answer surfaces to be part of search engine optimization rather than a separate discipline, on the grounds that the field has repeatedly absorbed new surfaces without renaming itself.

The technical foundations are shared almost entirely: crawlability, structured data, information architecture, and third-party references matter to both. A site that is illegible to a search crawler is generally illegible to an AI crawler for the same reasons.

AIOFacts position

AIOFacts position

What follows is an argument AIOFacts is making. It is not a finding, and no one else has adopted it.

AIOFacts uses AIO as an umbrella term for work intended to improve visibility, interpretation, citation, and representation across AI-powered discovery systems. The reason is that AIO names the class of system rather than a surface or a format, and surfaces turn over faster than the underlying problem does.

That is a reason to prefer a term. It is not evidence that the field agrees, and practitioners using SEO do not generally describe their work as a part of AIO. Where this site treats SEO as narrower than AIO, that is our classification and it is labelled as one.

Unsettled questions

Disputed

Credible practitioners disagree on the following. AIOFacts records the disagreement rather than resolving it by assertion.

  • Whether AI discovery constitutes a new discipline or a new surface within an existing one. This is the central disagreement in the field, and AIOFacts holds a position on it rather than a finding.
  • How much of search traffic is actually displaced by generated answers. Published figures vary widely and depend heavily on how the measurement defines a search and a click.
  • Whether optimizing for ranked links and optimizing for citation in a generated answer ever come into genuine conflict, or whether they remain complementary.

Every term here is defined once in the AIO glossary, and how each entered use is recorded on the terminology timeline. If you have a source that settles any of the questions above, send it.

The deeper difference is not tactical. SEO assumes a system stable enough to be learned; AI Optimization does not get that assumption, which is why it belongs to Adaptive Brand Management, a discipline built around the target moving rather than holding still.
