A sourced reference for AI Optimization
What is known about AIO.
AIOFacts documents the definitions, evidence, claims, disagreements, and changes shaping AI Optimization. It separates what can be supported from what is still emerging or unproven.
AIOFacts defines the terminology. The practice itself belongs to AIOTruth, which publishes how AI Optimization is evaluated and verified.

AIO / AI Optimization / noun
AI Optimization is the practice of improving how clearly AI-powered systems can access, understand, verify, and represent an entity, its information, and its evidence.
What is changing
A share of discovery is moving from ranked links to generated answers.
AI assistants and AI search surfaces now answer some questions directly instead of returning a list. How large that share is, and how fast it is growing, is measured differently by different sources. What is publicly observable is that the surface exists and that it names a small number of options.
The ranked-link path
Search, results, website, the person evaluates, the person decides. The practice built around it is search engine optimization.
The generated-answer path
Question, the system assembles an answer, a few sources are named, the person verifies and decides. This is the surface AIOFacts documents.
The framework
The AIOFacts working framework.
Seven signals AIOFacts uses to organize what a business publishes about itself. This is a framework we propose for structuring the work, not a description of what any AI system weighs internally. No one outside a model's operator can see that.
Entity Clarity
State plainly who you are, so a system reading your pages does not have to infer it.
Signal 2Trust Signals
Real reviews and reputation, published where they can be read and checked.
Signal 3Citation Authority
Be named and referenced by sources an AI system can reach and read.
Signal 4Structured Data
Schema.org markup, per the published vocabulary, so facts are machine-readable.
Signal 5Semantic Consistency
The same name, category, and claims across every source you control.
Signal 6Content Accessibility
Public, crawlable pages. A crawler cannot read what it is not served.
Signal 7Brand Recognition
A distinct, well-connected entity rather than one of several similar names.
All seven, in full
The terminology
Several names are in use, and none of them has won.
AIOFacts uses AIO as an umbrella term for work intended to improve visibility, interpretation, citation, and representation across AI-powered discovery systems. Other practitioners use GEO, AEO, LLMO, AI search optimization, and related terms differently. The terminology has not reached universal agreement.
| Term | Stands for | How its users describe it |
|---|---|---|
| AIO | AI Optimization | Used here as the broadest term, covering how AI systems access, understand, verify, and represent an entity. |
| GEO | Generative Engine Optimization | Used for visibility inside generative search answers. Its practitioners do not generally describe it as a part of AIO. |
| AEO | Answer Engine Optimization | Used for direct answers, snippets, and voice responses. |
| LLMO | LLM Optimization | Used for visibility in large language model outputs specifically. |
| SEO | Search Engine Optimization | Ranked-link search. Still in active use, and overlapping with all of the above. |
What gets measured
A second set of questions has appeared next to the traffic ones.
Ranked-link measures
How much traffic, what we rank for, how many clicks. Well established, well instrumented, and still in use.
Generated-answer measures
Whether we are named, cited, or referenced when an assistant answers. Newer, measured inconsistently, and not yet standardized across tools.
AIOFacts publishes no scores. Evaluating the signals a specific site publishes is what AIOInsights does.
The Source Library
111 entries, currently under audit.
The library was built from templates and from automated drafts, and none of its entries cites an external source. Automatic publication is paused. Every entry has been set to noindex, follow and removed from the sitemap until it passes the source audit. The pages are kept and readable, not deleted.
The New Marketing Scoreboard
What replaces traffic, rankings, and clicks: what AI platforms now report about appearance, what they withhold, and what can be honestly counted.
Proof Over Promises: Why Evidence Behaves Differently From Claims in AI Recommendation
Why checkable evidence behaves differently from unsupported claims when AI assistants retrieve, ground, and cite sources. Sourced, with limits stated.
The Future Website: Building for Machines and Humans at Once
How to build one site that serves human readers and automated retrieval clients at once, grounded in published platform documentation.
Hallucinations and Brand Safety
A sourced reference on why AI assistants state wrong things about organizations, what the evidence shows, and which controls are actually documented.
AIO for Enterprise Brands
A sourced reference on coordinating entity representation across many properties, subsidiaries, and markets, and the limits of what is knowable.
Hallucinations and Brand Safety
What is documented about confident AI errors involving named businesses, where liability has landed so far, and which correction paths actually exist.
Where this sits
AIOFacts is the reference layer of a larger system.
The AIO platform has one public front door and several engines behind it. AIOFacts is the definitions and standards layer. It documents; it does not diagnose, score, or sell.
AIOInsights
The flagship public platform and entry point. It unifies the engines and answers one question for a specific site: how does AI understand this business?
AIOTruth
The evaluation and verification engine behind the main AIOInsights checks. It examines the observable signals a specific site publishes.
AIOStory
The comparison engine: how a business shows up against others, and across locations. Comparison lives here, not on AIOFacts.
AIOWeather
The forecasting and change-intelligence engine: what is shifting in how AI systems retrieve and recommend, labeled by confidence.
AIOFacts
This site: the reference authority for definitions, standards, evidence, and technical education. It publishes no scores and runs no diagnostics.
Digilu
The company that provides strategy, implementation, ongoing management, and accountability. It publishes AIOFacts and sells work in this field, a conflict disclosed in the Editorial Method.
